Drone Update
Starting December 21, 2015 everyone (including real estate agents) with very few exceptions will need to register their drone(s) with the FAA.
After December 21, 2015, when you buy a drone you need to register it with the FAA prior to your 1st flight.
Existing drone owners have until February 19, 2016 to register.
Drones under 9 ounces do not need to be registered. Registration is still $5 and is good for 3 years.
The exception for the drones under 9 ounces is done for experimental purposes such as engineering schools experimenting with different designs and such.
Penalties for not registering are presently up to $27,500 in civil fines and $250,000 and 3 years in prison for criminal penalties.
Due to the serious nature of flying drones in civil airspace and the potential of collisions with aircraft, the fine and penalty is high to help assure registration compliance.
In part, registration compliance will help the FAA track the use and possible collision follow up issues as drones become more and more a popular activity increasing the liability of flight.
